Plain 5-Port Switch

Sometimes it is useful to use a DD-WRT router simply as a 5-port switch, with the wireless capabilities disabled.

OPTION #1

  • First, configure as a Client Bridge. (This allows use of the WAN RJ45 port, in addition to the four LAN ports, making five ports total.)
  • in Wireless -> Basic Settings:
    • under Wireless Network Mode choose Disabled
    • click Apply Settings
  • under Administration -> Management:
    • click Reboot Router button

The router will reboot and come up as a simple 5-port switch with the wireless radio off.

OPTION #2

This configuration allows the device to behave in the standard Client Bridge mode, or, at the touch of the WPS button, disable/enable the radio, turning the device into a 5-port switch only.

  • Select Client Bridge and make Wireless->Wireless Basic and Wireless->Wireless Security configuration, as needed
  • in Services -> Services:
    • under SES / AOSS / EZ-SETUP / WPS Button
      • in Turning off radio select Enable
      • when Turn radio off at boot appears, select Enable if want radio off upon boot
    • click Apply Settings

Now, with an approximately 1-second (until lighted) press of the WPS (Cisco bridge logo on WRT54 devices) button, the radio may be toggled ON and OFF.

NOTE: It is important to avoid wired/wireless loops in routing. Do not enable the radio in Client Bridging mode if the unit is also attached to the network with a wired cable.
