DD-WRT /
Linksys WRT56GS v7.2
- Purchased 2013-02-01 from Deseret Industries for $3 with power adapter.
- This router was upgraded 2013-02-01 to DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) micro (SVN revision 14929).
- 2MB ROM / 16MB RAM
- The DD-WRT upgrade went smoothly using the first section of detailed instructions from the wiki, except that the power-on-with-reset-button-pressed-for-20-seconds didn't seem necessary. It simply put the router into some kind of maintenance mode for flashing memory. Perhaps this is a last resort fall-back solution when all else fails to restore the factory firmware. In my case, I simply ignored that instruction (Item 5) and powered on, then proceeded with Item 6 to use the web-based admin tools available with the router in normal operational mode to install the vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin file and subsequent steps. I used a WinXP client to perform the upgrade and used XP's built-in TFTP client at the command line, as described in the instructions. All worked just perfectly.
- 2014-02-16 tried to setup as my primary Internet/LAN router with two wireless APs, one for normal use, as usual, and another for house guests that is separate from the internal LAN. I used information found on the Internet, particularly the DD-WRT.com wiki and this article: http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1730493 which is really a rehash of the wiki piece. The steps were many, but here they are, in their barest form, in case I need to do this again:
- (all of the following are using the Web GUI administration pages)
- Wireless->Basic Settings
- ADD Virtual Interface (APPLY SETTINGS)
- [MEH, CAN'T REMEMBER. NEED TO DO THIS FOR REAL AGAIN!!!]
- 2023-02-09: Using the DD-WRT GUI Firmware Upgrade facility I installed the generic DD-WRT v3.0-r44715 micro (11/03/20) build. This is the latest build recommended in the DD-WRT database for this unit.
